Carolyn
Tomao, owner of ABC CPR Services, Inc., has
always cared deeply about empowering people
to take action when someone is in need.
"It's important to me to educate people both
on saving a life and also preventing disability,"
Carolyn says. "With a few simple skills, family
and friends can enormously improve outcomes
when someone is experiencing a stroke, heart
attack, or other life threatening emergencies—
precious minutes can be saved when those on
hand know the right steps to take."
Carolyn, herself a long-time registered nurse,
took the training to become a CPR instructor
in 1995. She first trained her own friends,
family and colleagues. Seeing a gap between
the number of those in her community who needed
to learn the skills and the amount of courses
available, Carolyn jumped to fill the need
and launched ABC CPR in 1996.
Carolyn's
background and continuing career as a registered
nurse specializing in cardiac care and community
health has served her in good stead. She is
currently pursuing her Masters in Public Health
from University of Massachusetts at Amherst,
with a Bachelors in Nursing from Framingham
State College.
Her goal? To empower
people to be ready. "It's a rewarding to have
a participant say, 'I can do this, I'm comfortable
with this after training,'" she says. "It's
a very good feeling."
Carolyn is
a member of the following professional organizations:
- Massachusetts
Association of Public Health Nurses
- Massachusetts
Public Health Association
-
Metrowest Chamber of Commerce
Patricia Vossmer has been with Carolyn
at ABC CPR for over 8 years. As the lead Basic
Life Support (BLS) instructor, she's helped
hundreds gain their certification. Patricia,
or "Patty" as she's known, was a child care
provider for many years, and has extensive
experience in child safety and prevention.
Patty is responsible for leading most of the
classes and also mentoring new BLS CPR instructor
candidates. She's known for her non-intimidating
approach, her thorough teaching, and her ability
to bring out the best in people. Like Carolyn,
she's a big believer in the importance of
training to save a life.
MaryAnn
Williamson is the "go-to" person
for ABC CPR's business office. She handles
client accounts, billing, and all bookkeeping
responsibilities. Her 20+ years of office
management keep her unfazed by any situation.
MaryAnn's friendliness and accessibility keep
the ABC CPR office cheerful and welcoming.
She is proud of her sister and finds it very
rewarding to take part in Carolyn's important
mission.
Susan Chicco
is a welcomed addition to ABC CPR Services. She brings with her years of experience in office management and computers. She is responsible for the instructor data base and card processing. Susan recognizes, from a lay person perspective, the importance of CPR and first aid training and recently completed the training herself. | "We're
responsible for the emergency training
for almost 200 employees. We've been
working exclusively with ABC CPR for
the last four years, and we've been
very happy with them. Employees don't
always look forward to training, but
all the folks at ABC make it very
painless. They do a great job maintaining
the balance between making sure people
get certified but also understanding
the material. We've had had situations
where the staff had to use the skills,
and thank goodness they knew what
they were doing."
"Carolyn is our go-to person-she's extremely knowledgeable about state agencies. We always run things by her, get her opinion. She's extremely reliable, flexible, and professional. Very accommodating without bending the rules."
